Beach Shadows

Footprints and shadows: all we know

or dream is contained here,

as if all we did before middle age

had been recorded for posterity,

the assemblage of a secular life, writ large

upon the beach, like an indelible stain

upon the heart, or in a favourite tea cup.

A constant aide-mémoire defining

the past and redefining the present.

No faces, no windows to the soul, nothing

much to see, or guide the eye beyond

two silhouettes reaching out across time

and sand, watching the Atlantic advance

            and retreat.
