Footprints and shadows: all we know
or dream is contained here,
as if all we did before middle age
had been recorded for posterity,
the assemblage of a secular life, writ large
upon the beach, like an indelible stain
upon the heart, or in a favourite tea cup.
A constant aide-mémoire defining
the past and redefining the present.
No faces, no windows to the soul, nothing
much to see, or guide the eye beyond
two silhouettes reaching out across time
and sand, watching the Atlantic advance
