No Blood


My father used to take me

down this alleyway

near the five points

in Downtown Barrie

when I was eight or nine

years old

and tell me about all the fights

he got into there

on the way home from



Real bloodbaths

against the brick walls

and dumpsters.


I always looked for dried blood

as he talked.


There wasn’t any.


He said

he told his parents he fell

when he got home

covered in blood

and they believed
